Where I'm From

I’m from singing dolls and Barbie homes
Big enough to fit the whole world inside
I’m from chin length haircuts,
And bangs above eyebrows
I’m from chocolate cakes on birthdays
Sharing the flowers and noses
I’m from grandmother’s baklava
Its smell dwelling inside the house,
And sleeping in my mother’s bed
I remember I was scared
I’m from playing games on the streets
Hide-and-seek, and catch, and some made up ones,
And going to the pharmacy
To cover up wounds and lies.
I’m from behind, on top of and under the trees,
And following a special boy.
I’m from sweet smelling gardens,
And just around the corner schools
Studying with the special boy,
Now as a best friend.
I’m from eating the snow and drinking the rain
And cuddly stuffed animals
I’m from airplanes and airports
Smelling like hospitals
And having to move to eight hours away
In sixteen hours of time
